About GSA

Gay Swim Amsterdam (GSA) is one of the most welcoming LGBTQIA+ sports clubs in the Netherlands. Since its founding in 1995, GSA has grown to include around 120 members, all sharing a passion for swimming in a supportive, open, and respectful environment. Members join for various reasons, from improving swim techniques, preparing for swimming or triathlon competitions, to practicing open-water swimming when the canals are ice-free.

Many GSA members participate in both local and international competitions, and our regular training sessions are designed to help them build technique and fitness. For those who love open-water swimming, our club organizes swims throughout Amsterdam, from the Amstel River to the IJ and the Nieuwe Meer, allowing swimmers to enjoy the city’s waters year-round.

At GSA, we believe swimming is just one part of the experience. That’s why we prioritize building friendships and community connections both in and out of the pool. We regularly host social gatherings at Amsterdam’s popular gay venue, Taboo Bar, and our activities committee organizes fun events throughout the year. From scenic walks and bike rides to energetic bowling nights and karaoke sessions, GSA offers something for everyone.

Commission board

The GSA board is made up of six dedicated members, each with a specific role to help guide and support our community. The board structure is as follows:

Function

We encourage all members to reach out directly to any of our board members with questions, suggestions, or concerns. Whether it’s about training, events, or general club matters, the board is here to listen and help ensure GSA remains a welcoming and enjoyable space for everyone.

Love Swim

For several years, GSA has proudly hosted the LoveSwimβ€”a lively and exciting open-water event in the Amstel that has become a staple of Pride Amsterdam.

In 2019, LoveSwim celebrated its 5th edition with over 200 enthusiastic participants. The event kicks off at the Berlage Rowing Association, featuring various swim distances ranging from 250m to 1500m, accompanied by vibrant music and entertainment. Participants can also join in a fun triathlon or compete in relay races.

Each year, LoveSwim starts with a dazzling performance by talented singers, and the festivities continue with captivating entertainment, including a stylish gay swimwear catwalk and an impressive synchronized swimming demonstration. It’s a unique blend of sport and celebration that captures the spirit of Pride.

Confidant

If you experience any form of inappropriate behavior, you can reach out to the board, one of our confidential contact persons, or the Center for Safe Sports at NOC*NSF (www.centrumveiligesport.nl).

The confidential contact person is the primary resource within the sports club for anyone facing or questioning inappropriate behavior. They serve as the initial point of contact for all membersβ€”athletes, coaches, volunteers, board members, and othersβ€”who have concerns or complaints. This individual offers a listening ear, provides advice, and can direct you to the appropriate help if needed. Additionally, they work to advise and encourage the association to implement preventive measures.

At Gay Swim Amsterdam, we have two dedicated confidential contact persons: Rudolf Post and Miek Greebe, who are here to support you.

Below Rudolf and Miek briefly introduce themselves:

β€œWe have been swimming with great pleasure at GSA for a long time (Rudolf) and a few years (Miek). We think it is a great club. And we want everyone who swims at GSA to feel safe and respected. All members probably realize that they themselves contribute to a pleasant and safe sports environment. And how important that is! However, it can also happen at GSA that you feel excluded, are bullied or experience inappropriate behavior. Do not hesitate to contact either of us if you have questions or feel the need to talk about it. We are good listeners, may have answers to your questions and can at least give you advice on how to proceed. What you discuss with us will remain between us if you want it to.”
